TROODOS TRAVERSE: An unparalleled adventure| 8-Day Road Tour

A CHALLENGING EXPLORATION OF THE ISLAND

Backroads, small stone built villages, local wineries, old churches and chapels will be adding to your Cyprus tradition and country life experience. Not long into the tour, you will start feeling the warmth and the welcoming spirit of the locals in the Cyprus countryside.
This 250km long mountain bike tour takes you through some of the most authentic places in Cyprus: the Troodos villages, the famous Venetian bridges, abandoned or remote villages where you can witness how the locals enjoy an alternative lifestyle in tranquility and harmony with nature. Ride from the the virgin vegetation of Troodos forest, through the unspoiled beauty of the Akamas Peninsula all the way to the wide blues of the Mediterranean sea . The terrain of this tour is a varied mix of long climbs, single-trails, long descents and short flat sections. We will, mainly, be riding on soil and rocky terrain that never gets muddy and has great traction in the fast sections. 

We will enjoy local meals, coffees and sweets in hand-picked restaurants and taverns and be welcomed like family. As our journey through the forest reaches to an end, we welcome the first mediterranean views. The endless shimmering blue sea unfolds as far as the eye can see. Our descend will be accompanied by the salty breeze and the sweet sunshine that is never missing form ride in Cyprus. Can we spend one more day on the coast?

ACCOMMODATION

On this tour you will overnight in agrotouristic traditional houses, a small mountain-top hotel, humble yurts surrounded by nature, a luxury hotel with incredible spa and coastal properties right on the water!

  • After your arrival at the airport you will make your way to Potamitissa village, where we will spend our rst night. Your Activate Cyprus guide will be there to greet you and to help you get settled in your room. Depending on your time of arrival you will be free to explore the village and get fitted on your bike before joining the group for your first Cypriot dining experience. Your guide will briefly explain our plan for the week and answer any questions you have.

    Brace yourselves for the adventure begins! The first day of riding will involve some challenging yet very rewarding bits. From Agros we start riding towards Madari, the second highest peak on the island, where we will enter a single-track network. We follow the majestic twists and turns of this unique single trail path all the way around the highest peaks of the mountain. Can you imagine the views? Our accommodation for the evening is located just there. A cold local beer awaits you and a well-deserved BBQ is due.

  • Distance: 46km | Total Ascent: 540m

    For our second day of riding, the top of the island waits for us! Mt Olympus stands at 1952m and is our rst challenge for the day. Following the Circular trails of Olympos we reach the top. After indulging the magnicent views from the top we start descending towards Caledonia Waterfall, one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the mountain. Once we’ve explored around, dipped our toes and got refreshed with nature we carry on our route in the direction of Prodromos Dam. Once more the views will not disappoint, make sure you have your lens handy for this day. We are soon to enter the stunning Marathassa valley, an area full of fresh fruits and various tastes of local products.

    Soak up the sun and soft breeze while riding through the cherry trees and apple orchards of this hidden gem, you’ll wish it never ends.

    After riding through the backroads and forest trails in an exhilarating descend, we will reach the village of Kalopanayiotis. Wonder around and the scenic stone alleys and explore the traditional houses preserved in their original state. This is our final destination for today.

    After savoring a traditional Cypriot breakfast gear up for today’s stunner of a ride. If you are a nature lover, this ride is for you! We will ride through a precious part of the Paphos forest, home to our endemic species, the mouflon and many other animals and birds.

    We start with a shuttle that will drop us off to Kykkos Monastery, built in 11th century. From there we head toward a location called “Stavros tis Psokas”. We will soon leave all signs of civilisation behind us and emerge into the dense, enchanting Paphos forest. Once we reach “Stavros tis Psokas” we will have our first break of the day at the local forest station. Enjoy a nice coffee and a Cyprus sweet in one of the most tranquil places of the entire week. From Stavros we descent towards the Ezousa valley to our next overnight location, Sarama village. This descend features one of our favourite trails of the whole week. It runs along the Stavros river, between huge ancient trees and surrounded by high cliffs. The valley is quite narrow which makes the views more dramatic and breathtaking. The trails will take us thought the abandoned village of Sarama, before we reach our overnight accommodation in Yurt tends.

DAY BY DAY

  • Distance: 25km| Total Ascent: 590m

    Today you’ll be woken up gently from the first rays of sun, creeping through the canvas of your yurt. There is nothing like starting a day surrounded by nature! After enjoying a leisurely breakfast, we will join the trails again for another day of adventures. Our ride today heads for the coast. There is nothing like the open vistas of the sparking blue Mediterranean sea after 4 days of riding in the pine trees.

    Soon enough you will be able to sense the salty breeze of the sea. We will head for the village of Argaka where we can take a break and enjoy a coffee and a traditional snack. A short distance from here we will be able to to see the west banks of Cyprus, surrounding our final destination, Polis village, in an endless blue gown. Tonight we will overnight by the water in the friendly village of Polis Chysochous. Pack your swimsuit for this!

  • A well-deserved pause! Today is yours to enjoy in whichever way you wish. We suggest a half day optional boat tour to the blue lagoon of Akamas including time for a swim and a barbeque lunch on the boat or simply a complete relaxation beach day.

  • Distance: 72km| Total Ascent: 640m

    We finish the epic Troodos Traverse with a bang as today is the longest riding day of the week! The theme of the day is unspoiled beauty and love since we start our ride from the famous showers of Venus, “Aphrodite's Baths”. We will be riding shoulder to shoulder with the peninsula's most renowned coasts. Legend has it that this place was Aphrodite and Adonis’ love nest. A stop at the location "Fontana Amorosa" and the turtle nesting Lara Beach will persuade you. We then ride next to the infamous Avakas Gprge, the deepest hikable gorge in Cyprus. For the rest of the way we’ll be accompanied by the waves of the west coast and the limestone sea caves of the coastal trails that lead all the way to Paphos.The tour ends at the medieval Castle of Paphos overlooking the port. A well-earned beer is in store!

    Tonight we will dine as a group and celebrate the adventures and memories of a great week of riding!

  • You won’t be able to believe the week has come to an end. It’s time for a bittersweet farewell! A private shuttle will be there to transport you to the airport. But don’t worry, we are always here to recommend what to do on your next adventure!!

What to pack

We know you come to Cyprus to sport those short sleeves but if you are visiting the mountains in October or November we recommend having some rain proof gear. While we can provide you with pedals and saddles we do recommend that you bring your own to ensure you are most comfortable.
