With a bright history of 23 years, the international mountain bike race Cyprus Sunshine Cup, is now upgraded and renamed, with important changes and upgrades in the race structure. Cyprus Sunshine Epic will take place between February 27th and March 1st and the organizers have proceeded into changes that will provide the opportunity for even more amateur cyclists to meet and ride alongside world class athletes.
The most important upgrade in the race structure is that the athletes will now compete in teams of two and not individually, just like the famous Cape Epic in South Africa. The team classification is a common practise in the world of mountain bike stage races.
«Important race upgrades»
Mike Hadjioannou, general manager of Activate Cyprus, talked about the race and the upgrades in its structure:
«Cyprus Sunshine Epic is considered to be one of the most important mountain bike races in the world, with a 23 year old legacy. For years, the top riders of the world visit Cyprus in order to compete in the race. In the last few years, we are hosting in the event the non-professional categories. Following the trend of the most well-known stage races, we have decided on several changes which will upgrade the race and we are expecting to attract even more non-professional mountain bikes to visit Cyprus and compete in the race. From 2020, the riders will compete in teams of two and not individually, and the total distance of the stages will be increased».
As for the routes, which have been highlighting Cyprus’ rare beauty, Mike Hadjioannou stated:
«Even though we have proceeded with several changes in the race structure and in two of the courses, the course identity remains the same and highlights the beautiful Cyprus nature. We are delighted that every year we get very positive feedbacks from riders who visit Cyprus from abroad, who are impressed from the courses and the hospitality of the people from all the villages that are hosting the race».
The Cyprus Sunshine Epic will be once again the ultimate cycling celebration for Cyprus, with Olympic Medallists, World Champions and amateur mountain bikers competing in one of the most important mountain bike races in the world.
